Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Illustrator CS2

Gradient Stroke

Gradient Stroke tutorial preview.

For some reason Illustrator doesn’t let you set a gradient to a stroke, only to fills, so if you ever want to add a gradient around an object or something like that you have to use a little trick.

After the shape has been created and the stroke width has been set, convert it to a path by going to Object » Path » Outline Stroke.

Note that if the original shape had a fill, you’ll have a group consisting of two shapes after the Outline Stroke has been applied: the original and the “ex-stroke”.

In order to work with the shapes without ungrouping them, use the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) instead of the Selection Tool (black arrow), or use the Layers Palette to select which object you want to modify.
