TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

How to Edit a Pattern Swatch

If you want to make changes to a pattern swatch, drag it from the Swatches palette onto the artboard, make the necessary changes and then either drag it back to the palette or go to Edit » Define Pattern.

Note that when you drag the swatch from the palette all objects are grouped.
