TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Multi-pointed Stars

Preview image for the Multi-Pointed Star tutorial.

There are two ways for creating a multi-pointed star in Illustrator: one is by inserting the exact dimensions of the star, and the other one is to use the keyboard to modify the number of sides and radius.

The first thing to do is to select the Star Tool.

1. Using the exact dimensions

For this method just click (and release) on the artboard to open the Star Options box.

Radius 1 » the distance from the center of the star to the innermost points.
Radius 2 » the distance from the center of the star to the outermost points (tips).

Just click OK and the shape will be created.

2. Using the keyboard

Hold the Alt key and start dragging with the Star Tool to define the Radius 1 size (ignore the rest of the shape for the time being). Stop dragging and release the Alt key when ready and don’t release the mouse.

Hold the Ctrl key to define the Radius 2 size. Again stop dragging and release the Ctrl key only.

To add sides to the star use the Up arrow; to remove sides use the Down arrow.

Release the mouse when finished.
