Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Asteroid

Preview image for the Asteroid tutorial.

Required download » MuRa’s Cloud 2.2

Create a new image.
» Settings: 400×400 pixels, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Set the foreground color to dark grey and the background color to light grey.

With the Freehand tool, create the shape of the asteroid (a very distorted ellipse if that helps).
» Settings: selection type = freehand, feather = 0, antialias checked.

Load MuRa’s Cloud plug-in.
Click on the Reset Colors button and change the Contour amount to 5 or more.
Apply it.

Duplicate this layer and go to Effects – Texture Effects – Emboss.

Change the layer’s blend mode to Difference and merge the visible layers.

Go to Selections – Modify – Contract by 2.
Invert the selection and hit delete.
Deselect.

With the Retouch tool, create a top lighting using the Dodge mode and then some shadows at the bottom using the Burn mode.
» Settings (for both): shape = round, size = 100, hardness = 0, opacity = 25, step = 25, density = 100.

Note: the lighting/shadow is the key for creating a more realistic asteroid.

You can also create the effect of a falling asteroid by duplicating the layer and adding a Wind effect.

Note: the background I created using Add Noise and Colorize to change the noise color to grey.
