Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Aurora Borealis

Note: this is the kind of effect that is easier to apply through tubes, so the following steps are for the Aurora Borealis tube creation.
The more tubes you make the better, however, it is best to create each shape separately and then put them all in one big canvas to export as a tube, otherwise some lights might end up mixed up.

Create a new image.
» Settings: 400×400 pixels, 72 dpi, background color = white, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Add a new vector layer.

Set the foreground color to black and the background null.

With the Draw tool, create a curvy path for the lights.
» Settings: type = point to point line, width = 1, line style = #1 solid, antialias + create as vector = checked.

With the Object Selector tool, select the line.
Right-click and choose Align Object – Center in Canvas.
Right-click again and choose Create Raster Selection and hit delete.
Keep selected.

Go to Selections – Modify – Expand by 25 (or more).
Hit Ctrl + H or go to Selections – Modify – Feather and set it to 25 pixels.

Layers – Merge – Visible.

Load the Ulead Particle plug-in.
On the Smoke Effect, change the settings as shown below:

Save these settings by clicking on the Add button so that you don’t have to change them again when re-applying the effect.

Load the plug-in again and click on the Load button to load the previous settings.
Change the color to bright green or another tone of blue or any other color you wish and hit the Random button to change the positioning.

Apply this effect as many times you wish.

When finished, deselect and apply a Motion Blur effect.
» Settings: angle = 0, intensity = 40 pixels.

Apply Mac’s Remove White plug-in.

Double-click on the Crop tool
» Settings: Select Opaque Area – Current Layer = checked.
Press Shift + R to perform the crop.

Go to File – Export – Picture Tube.
Leave all the default settings and name your tube.

Now all you have to do is apply it on top of another image (preferably on a new raster layer).
