Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Crescent Moon

Preview image for the Crescent Moon tutorial.

Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Set the foreground color to null and background color to black.

Note: you can, of course, use different settings. I’m suggesting these just to make it easier for you to view the shape in the end. Also, keep in mind that color attributes for vectors can be changed at any time.

With the Preset Shapes tool, make a circle.
» Settings: shape = ellipse, antialias = checked, create as vector = checked.

Tip: hold the Shift key while using the ellipse tool in order to get a circle instead.

Note: because the default layer is raster, a new vector layer will be automatically created once you add your circle.

With the Object Selector tool, right-click on the circle and select Node Edit from the pop-up menu.

Click on the right node of the circle and drag it close to the left (that’s going to determine the shape’s width).
Try to follow a straight line for this (turn on grids or create a guide if necessary).

Select both top and bottom nodes.
Hit Ctrl + L or right-click and choose Node Type » Convert to Line from the pop-up menu.

Tip: after clicking on the first node, hold the Shift key in order to add the second node to the selection.

Now all you have to do is some fine tuning on the left and right nodes.
Select both nodes and hit Ctrl + S or right-click and choose Node Type » Symmetric.
Since one can’t increase the handles’ size while both nodes are selected, hold the Shift key and click on the node that you don’t want to edit at the moment.
Increase the other node’s handles by pulling them up or down (depending on the direction indicated by the handles’ arrow).

Tip: hold the Shift key to move the handle up or down in a 90° angle.

Select the other node and modify the handles’ size too.

Hit Ctrl + Q or right-click and choose Quit Node Editing when you are done.
