Closed (sort of)
TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.
There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Easy Bear

Updated on June 27, 2004 for fewer steps and a new tie.
Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.
Rename Layer1 to head.
Set the stroke color to null and the background color to brown.
» My color: #AE806A.
With the Preset Shapes tool create an ellipse for the bear’s head.
» Settings: ellipse, retain style = unchecked, antialias = checked, create as vector = unchecked.
Go to Selections – Select All / Float.
Apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: vertical + horizontal offset = 0, opacity = 50, blur = 50, color = dark brown, fill interior with color = unchecked.
» My color: #674839.
Note: Apply this Cutout effect for every brown shape you create. Don’t forget to select the shape before applying it.
Deselect.
Add a new raster layer. Name it ear#1.
With the Preset Shapes tool make a circle on the left for the bear’s ear.
Note: To make a circle using the Preset Shapes tool simply hold down the Shift key when using the Ellipse shape.
Apply the Cutout and deselect.
Add a new raster layer. Name it ear#2.
Change the fill color to pink and make a smaller circle inside the previous one.
» My color: #D7A5AC.
Apply a Cutout using blur = 15 and color = dark pink.
» My color: #8A3E4B.
Deselect.
Hide the head layer and merge the visible layer (ear#1 and ear#2).
Move the Merged layer under the head layer and make this one visible again.
Make the Merged layer active and duplicate it.
Go to Image – Mirror.
Move the duplicate ear to its proper position on the other side of the head if needed.
Hide the head layer again and merge visible.
Make the head layer visible again and rename Merged to ears.

Add a new raster layer. Name it body.
Move this layer under ears.
Change the fill color to brown again.
With the Preset Shapes tool create a big ellipse for the bear’s body.
Apply the Cutout using blur = 50 and color = dark brown again.
Deselect.
Add a new raster layer. Name it foot#1R¥21;.
With the Preset Shapes tool create a circle on the right for the foot.
Apply the Cutout and deselect.
Duplicate the foot#1 layer and rename the copy to foot#2.
Move the duplicate shape to the other side of the body.
Move the foot#2 layer under the body layer.

Make the foot#1 layer active.
Add a new raster layer. Name it arm#1.
With the Preset Shapes tool draw a long ellipse on the right for the arm.
Go to Image – Rotate.
» Settings: direction = left, degrees = 30 (free), all layers = unchecked.
Properly place the arm on the right side of the body.
Apply the Cutout and deselect.
Duplicate the arm#1 layer and make the duplicate layer active.
Go to Image – Mirror and place the duplicate shape on the left side of the body.
Rename this layer to arm#2 and send it to the bottom (under foot#2).

Make the head layer active.
Add a new raster layer. Name it tie#1.
Change the fill color to yellow.
» My color: #F1C057.
With the Preset Shapes tool create a circle on the bottom part of the head.
Apply a Cutout using blur = 15 and color = dark yellow.
» My color: #B88310.
Deselect.
Add a new raster layer. Name it tie#2.
Create a long vertical ellipse with the Preset Shapes tool and place its top tip on the center of the yellow circle.
Apply the Cutout and deselect.
Move this layer under the tie#1 layer.

Make the tie#1 layer active.
Add a new raster layer. Name it eye#1.
Change the fill color to black.
With the Preset Shapes tool create a circle for one of the eyes.
Change the fill color to white.
With the Preset Shapes tool create a circle at the top left area of the eye and a smaller one on the bottom right area to make it shine a bit.
Duplicate this layer and move the duplicate shape to the other side of the head.
Rename the duplicate layer to eye#2.
Add a new raster layer. Name it nose.
Change the fill color to dark brown.
» My color: #674839.
With the Preset Shapes tool make an ellipse for the nose.
Apply the Cutout using blur = 15 and color = black.
Deselect.
Add a new raster layer. Name it mouth.
Change the stroke color to black and the fill color to null.
With the Draw tool make the mouth as shown below.
» Settings: point to point line, width = 1, line style = #1 solid, antialias = checked, create as vector + close path = unchecked.
Note: The mouth was made using two lines.

Move the mouth layer under the nose layer and your bear is ready.
