Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Feather

Preview image for the Feather tutorial.

Create a new image.
» Settings: 250×500 pixels, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Add a new vector layer and delete Layer 1.

Set the foreground to null and background color to very light grey.

With the Draw tool create the following shape.
» Settings: type = point to point line, antialias + create as vector + close path = checked.

Add a new vector layer and move it under the first one.

Change the background color to the main color of your feather.

With the Preset Shapes tool create an ellipse starting at the top of the previous shape and ending at least 100 pixels away from the bottom.
» Settings: ellipse, retain style = unchecked, antialias + create as vector = checked.

When you finish creating the shapes, convert each layer to raster.

Make the bottom layer active and hit Lock Transparency on the Layer Palette.

With the Airbrush tool, paint several spots of different tones of the feather’s main color all over the shape.
» Settings: shape = round, size = 70, hardness = 100, opacity = 100, step = 25, density = 15.

With the Retouch tool set as Smudge, smudge each side of the feather diagonally up towards the outside area. Be careful not to smudge to the wrong side when working on the middle.
» Settings: shape = round, size = 30, hardness = 100, opacity = 60, step = 1, density = 20.

Hit Lock Transparency again.

Change the Retouch tool settings to size = 20 and density = 100.

This time smudge diagonally down starting on the outside and moving towards the middle. Make only a few marks with this movement.

Change the brush size to 50 and density to 10 and again smudge diagonally down starting from the outside towards the middle but this time make this movement on the entire feather.

Make the first shape layer active.

Apply an Inner Bevel effect.
» Settings: bevel = second from the left starting on top, width = 22, smoothness = 48, depth = 3, ambience = 0, shininess = 0, color = white, angle = 315, intensity = 45, elevation = 30.

Change the Retouch tool to Soften.
» Settings: size = 40, hardness = 0, opacity = 25, step = 1, density = 25.
Pass it just a little bit along the shape so that it doesn’t look too hard compared to the rest of the feather.

Go to Effects – Noise – Add 8% uniform.
