TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

Paint Shop Pro 7
Heliconius erato Butterfly

Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.
Add a new vector layer. Name it Body.
Delete Layer 1.
Set the foreground to null and background color to black.
With the Draw tool create the butterfly’s body.
» Settings: type = point to point line, antialias + create as vector + close path = checked.

With the Object Selector tool, right-click on the shape and select Align – Center in Canvas.
Convert this layer to raster.
Add a new vector layer. Name it Wing.
Set the background color to blue.
» My color: #077CF3.
With the Draw tool make just one wing.

Convert this layer to raster.
Add a new raster layer.
Set the foreground color to black and background to null.
With the Draw tool, make a diagonal line starting at the head and ending anywhere you wish.
» Settings: type = single line, width = 1, line style = #1 solid, antialias checked, create as vector + close path = unchecked.
Duplicate this layer.
Go to Image Mirror.
Hide the Body and Wing layers and Merge Visible.
Rename the Merged layer to Antennae and make the other layers visible again.
With the Antennea layer active, apply the Ripple effect.
» Settings: amplitude = 2, wavelength = 40, horizontal center = 5, vertical center = 30.
Make the Wing layer active.
With the Retouch tool set to Lightness Up, lighten the bottom edge of the wing.
» Settings: shape = round, size = 60, hardness = 0, opacity = 50, step = 25, density = 100.
Change the Retouch tool mode to Lightness Down
» Settings: use the same settings as before.
Pass it on the top area.
Change the Retouch tool to Hue Up and make a pink spot on the top middle area of the wing.
» Settings: size = 50, hardness = 0, opacity = 100, step = 25, density = 100.
Change the Retouch tool mode to Lightness Up and make a small white spot on the right tip of the wing.
» Settings: size = 25, hardness = 0, opacity = 100, step = 25, density = 100.
Duplicate the Wing layer and go to Image – Mirror.
Make the Body layer active.
With the Retouch tool set to Lightnesss Up make a vertical line following the entire body length.
» Settings: same settings as before.
Move the Antannae layer under the body layer and your butterfly is ready.
