Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Little Elephant

Preview image for the Little Elephant tutorial.

Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Add a new vector layer. Name it Body.
Delete Layer1.

Set the foreground to null and background color to grey or brownish grey.
» My color: #7B6D63.

With the Draw tool, create the elephant’s body as shown below.
» Settings: type = point to point line, antialias + create as vector + close path = checked.

Add a new vector layer. Name it Ivory.
Move it under the Body layer.

Choose a light ivory color for your background and create the elephant’s ivory.
» My color: #EDE3DD.

Add a new vector layer. Name it Leg.
Move it under the Body layer.

Change the background color to a darker shade of grey.
» My color: #6A5C52.

Make the elephant’s fourth leg.

Make the Body layer active and add a new vector layer. Name it Ear.

Use the same color as the leg for the background.

When you finish creating the shapes, convert each layer to raster.

Make the Body layer active.

Apply a Fine Leather effect.
» Settings: color = black, angle = 210, blur = 1, number = 10, length = 5, transparency = 248.

Go to Selections – All – Float.

Apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: vertical + horizontal = 0, opacity = 60, blur = 30, color = dark grey, fill interior with color = unchecked.
» My color: #38312C.
Deselect.

Make the Leg layer active.

Apply the Fine Leather effect using the same settings as before.

Go to Selections – All – Float and apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: same as before, color = black.
Deselect.

Make the Ear layer active.

Apply the Fine Leather effect using the same settings as before but with number = 50 and length = 5.

Go to Selections – All – Float and apply the same Cutout effect as before.
Deselect.

Make the Ivory layer active.

Go to Selections – All – Float.

Apply a Cutout Effect.
» Settings: vertical + horizontal = 1, opacity = 100, blur = 10, color = darker shade of the original ivory color.
» My color: #C2A898.
Deselect.

Make the Body layer active and add a new raster layer. Name it Eye.

Change the background color to black.

With the Preset Shapes tool create a circle for the eye.
» Settings: ellipse, antialias = checked, retain style + create as vector = unchecked.

Note: To make a circle using the Preset Shapes tool simply hold down the Shift key when using the Ellipse shape.

Change the background color to white and make a smaller circle inside the black one on the top left area.
