Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Little Giraffe

Updated on July 18, 2004 – added another leg and another ear, plus a tail.

Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Add a new vector layer. Name it body.
Delete Layer1.

Set the foreground to null and background color to yellow.
» My color: #FCD176.

With the Draw tool, create the giraffe’s body.
» Settings: type = point to point line, antialias + create as vector + close path = checked.

With the Object Selector tool, right-click on the shape and choose Create Raster Selection.
Save this selection to an alpha channel and deselect.

Add a new vector layer. Name it leg.

Change the background color to a darker yellow.
» My color: #F6B322.

Create the fourth leg.

Move this layer under the body layer and make it active.

Add a new vector layer. Name it ear.

Make the second ear as shown below.

Add a new vector layer. Name it hair.

Change the background color to orange.
» My color: #F76721.

Make the mane and then the tail.

Make the body layer active.

Add a new raster layer. Name it horn.

With the Preset Shapes tool create a small circle at the top of the horn.
» Settings: ellipse, retain style + create as vector = unchecked, antialias = checked.

Note: To make a circle using the Preset Shapes tool simply hold down the Shift key when using the Ellipse shape.

Add a new raster layer. Name it spots.

Set the foreground color to orange (same as before) and the background color to dark yellow (same as before).

With the Preset Shapes tool create several spots on the giraffe’s body, as shown below.

Load the selection from the alpha channel, invert it and hit delete.
Invert the selection again and keep selected.

Add a new raster layer. Name it cutout.

Apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: vertical + horizontal = 0, opacity = 100, blur = 25, color = dark yellow, fill interior with color = unchecked.
Deselect and move this layer under the horn layer.

Make the hair layer active and convert it to raster.

Go to Selections – All – Float.

Apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: vertical + horizontal = 0, opacity = 100, blur = 15, color = dark orange.
» My color: #C24508.

Do the same thing on the horn layer.

Make the spots layer active and add a new raster layer. Name it eye.

Set the foreground to null and background to black.

With the Preset Shapes tool create a circle for the eye.

Change the background color to white and make a smaller circle at the top left area of the previous circle.
