TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

Little Zebra

Updated on July 18, 2004 – added 2 more layers for ears and legs.
Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.
Add a new vector layer. Name it body.
Delete Layer1.
Set the foreground to null and background color to white.
With the Draw tool create the zebra’s body.
» Settings: type = point to point line, antialias + create as vector + close path = checked.

With the Object Selector tool, right-click on the shape and choose Create Raster Selection.
Save this selection to an alpha channel.
Deselect.
Add a new vector layer. Name it ear.
Move it under the body layer.
Change the background color to light grey.
» My color: #E2DEDE.
Make the other ear.

Note: added a grey background just for you to see better the screenshots. If you wish to also work with a background simply add a new raster layer, send it to bottom and flood fill it with the desired color.
Add a new vector layer. Name it legs.
Create the other legs.


Make the body layer active and add a new raster layer. Name it stripes.
Set the foreground color to black and background to null.
With the Draw tool, create several vertical stripes.
» Settings: type = single line, width = 5, 10 and 20, line style = #1 solid, antialias checked, create as vector + close path = unchecked.

Apply a Twirl effect.
» Settings: degrees = 132.
Load the body selection from the alpha channel.
Invert the selection and hit delete.
Invert the selection again.
Keep selected.
Add a new raster layer. Name it bodycutout.
Apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: vertical = -5, horizontal = 0, opacity = 50, blur = 25, color = black, fill interior with color = unchecked.
Deselect.
Make the legs layer active.
Select both shapes with the Object Selector tool, right-click and choose Create Raster Selection.
Save this selection to an alpha channel.
Deselect.
Note: to select more than one object simply hold the Shift key and click on the objects you want to add.
Create a few thin stripes for these shapes as well and apply the Cutout effect with opacity = 100.
Note: you might have to move the stripes a bit once you apply the Twirl effect.
Make the ear layer active.
Create a selection for this shape, plus the stripes and apply the Cutout effect with opacity = 25.
Hide all layers except for body, stripes and bodycutout.
Merge visible and rename it to body.
Make the other layers visible again.
Make the body layer active.
With the Retouch tool, create the mane and the tail.
» Mane settings: Smudge, shape = round, size = 25, hardness = 0, opacity = 50, step = 1, density = 50.
» Tail settings: same as above, but change the opacity to 100 and the density to 75.

Add a new raster layer. Name it eye.
Set the foreground color to white and the background color to black.
With the Preset Shapes tool, create a circle for the eye.
» Settings: ellipse, retain style + create as vector = unchecked, antialias = checked, width = 2, line style = #1 solid.
Note: To make a circle using the Preset Shapes tool simply hold down the Shift key when using the Ellipse shape.
Change the foreground to null and background to white.
Make a small circle at the top left area of the previous one.
