TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

With the Selection tool make a circle any size you wish.
» Settings: selection type = circle, feather = 0, antialias = checked.
Fill this circle with black and deselect.

Create another circle, starting a little bit to the right of the middle point of the previous one.
Make it slightly smaller than the first one, so that you don’t end up “cutting” part the black circle.
Hit delete and deselect.

Go to Effects – Ripple.
» Settings: amplitude = 3, wavelength = 35, horizontal + vertical center = 50.

Go to Effects – CurlyQs.
» Settings: number of columns = 5, number of rows = 5, size = 50%, strength = 5.

Finally, go to Noise – Median Filter.
» Settings: filter aperture = 9.

The mug stain is ready.

This is how it can look once applied to another surface (with a little tweaking):

This is how you can achieve a similar effect:
· copy and paste the stain as new layer over the surface you wish to apply it to;
· change the perspective if needed with the Deformation tool;
· go to Selections – Select All / Float;
· then Selections – Modify – Contract, 2 pixels is a good amount to contract unless you’ve made a really big stain;
· Flood Fill the selection with medium grey;
· change the layer’s blend mode to Burn and lower the opacity until you think it looks fine.
