TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Note: works best with thick fonts.

Create a new image.
» Settings: any size you wish, 72 dpi, background color = transparent, image type = 16.7 million colors.

Set the foreground to null and background color to the one you want the text to be.
» My color: #FAA80A.

Enter your text. Make sure you have vector and antialias checked.

With the Object Selector tool, right-click on your text and choose Create Raster Selection.
Keep selected.

Convert this layer to raster.

Add a new raster layer.

Apply a Cutout effect.
» Settings: vertical + horizontal = 0, opacity = 100, blur = 15, color = darker shade from the one used for the text, fill interior = unchecked.
» My color: #724B06

Note: decrease the amount of blur when working with thin letters.

Add a new raster layer.

Flood Fill the selection with white.

Keep selected and apply a Gaussian Blur effect.
» Settings: radius = 10.

Note: decrease the amount of blur when working with thin letters.

Change this layer’s blend mode to Dodge and lower the opacity a bit.

Add a new raster layer.

Flood Fill the selection with black and apply an Inner Bevel effect.
» Settings: bevel = second image starting from the top left corner, width = 10, smoothness = 10, depth = 10, ambience = 0, shininess = 75, color = white, angle = 315, intensity = 42, elevation = 36.

Note: increase the softness when using very thin letters.

Change this layer’s blend mode to Lighten.

Go to Selections – Modify – Contract by 1 / Invert and hit delete.
