Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Fade from Photo to Solid Color

Fade from Photo to Solid Color tutorial preview.

Although I already have a tutorial that deals with fading gradient tricks (Fade from Color to Greyscale), I decided to write yet another one due to the amount of requests for such effect in several different forums. This effect is usually wanted for web pages, but it is not uncommon for it to be used on magazines as well. Of course, you can end up using it in very different ways ;)

Open your photo and hit Shift + D to duplicate it. Close the original.

With the Dropper Tool (E) pick a foreground color from the photo.

Set the foreground to gradient and click on the material box to open the Material Properties.
Click the Edit button to open the Gradient Editor.

On the Gradient Editor, click on the New… button and enter a name for your gradient.

Set your gradient as shown below:

Note that for the first gradient slider the Fore box is selected, which means that it will use the color set as foreground (which is what you did with the Dropper Tool.

In case you are having problems setting the gradient properly, take a look at my Creating Gradients tutorial.

Although the Creating Gradients tutorial was written for PSP 7, it will work perfectly for PSP X, since the Gradient Editor remained the same.

Click the Close button in the Gradient Editor and hit OK in the Material Properties.

Will the Flood Fill Tool (F), fill the photo with the gradient.
» Settings: match mode = none, blend mode = normal, opacity = 100.
