Closed (sort of)

TEOM as you know it has been closed. I will keep it up for reference but it no longer will receive tutorial updates.

There are plans for a completely new site. If you'd like to be notified once the other site is up, simply subscribe to my mailing list.

Thanks for the support throughout all these years :)

Greyscale and Color

Edit: April 22, 2006 »The base image is full colored. In this tutorial, the effect of color added to a greyscale image is done by removing color from the photo while keeping one colored detail.

Open your image, hit Shift + D to duplicate it and close the original.

Create a selection around the area you wish to keep as colored.

I prefer to work with vectors for making the selection since it gives me more freedom to modify the shape whenever I want. However, if you don’t feel comfortable with vectors you can use the Freehand Selection Tool which works fine too, although a little bit more limited.

Edit: April 29, 2006 » With the Freehand Selection Tool you can get a good result by setting the selection type to Edge Seeker.

Once the selection is created, delete the vector layer (if you worked with one), and invert the selection.

Go to Adjust » Hue and Saturation » Colorize.
» Settings: saturation = 0.

Edit: April 29, 2006 » The Hue can be leaved at any value. Since the Saturation is set to 0 (zero) any value that is entered for Hue still results in greyscale.%

Make any other adjustments such as brightness and contrast on the greyscale area and deselect.
